Swedish Meatballs

Meatballs are just one of those dishes that you can make a million different ways and each and every one is deliciously satisfying in it's own way. But I must say, this is one of my favorites.

Swedish Meatballs are a simple dish and a wonderful comfort food. I adore the hint of nutmeg in the meatballs, and how this combines beautifully with the creamy sauce. This is a dish that I can see becoming a regular in our household!

Swedish Meatballs

Serves 4

500 g ground beef
1/2 onion, finely diced
2 Cloves garlic, crushed
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground pepper
1 egg
1/4 Cup wholemeal breadcrumbs
1/3 Cup flour
4 Tbsp butter
2 Cups beef stock
1/2 Cup cream

1. Combine the beef, onion, garlic, nutmeg, allspice, salt, pepper, egg, and breadcrumbs together in a bowl. Shape into meatballs, and roll each meatball in the flour.

2. Melt half of the butter in a large fry pan. Add the meatballs and brown all over. Remove from pan and set aside.

3. Add the remaining butter into the pan and whisk in the left over flour. Add the beef stock, mix well to remove any lumps. Add the meatballs back to the pan. Simmer for 10 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.

4. Stir in the cream and serve over mashed potatoes or pasta.

  4. It tastes even better if mixing beef and pork mince (50/50). In Sweden most mince is sold like this and is used for everything.
