Sausage rolls make a simple lunch, dinner, or kid's birthday party finger food. Putting them together is quick and easy and of course making your own is a much healthier alternative to buying the frozen rolls in a supermarket.
With a recipe like this it's really easy to tailor the taste to suit you and your families own taste buds. Change the meat for lamb or pork, leave out the mixed herbs, use tomato sauce in place of Worcestershire, use your imagination :)
When making the sausage rolls, cut them to a length that suits their purpose - if they are for dinner, cut each roll of pastry into 3 to make 9 large sausage rolls, if you're making them for a party cut them much smaller into a lot of bite-sized pieces.
I have just made these again (and rephotographed! December 2014) for a graduation party. They went down a treat and were loved both hot and cold.
Beef Sausage Rolls
Makes approx 9
600 g (21 oz) ground beef
1 Onion, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 Tbsp wholemeal breadcrumbs
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp dried mixed herbs
3 Sheets puff pastry, thawed
1 egg, lightly beaten
1. Preheat oven to 200C (400F)
2. Combine beef, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, and mixed herbs in a bowl. Mix well.
3. Place one third of the mixture across the width of each pastry sheet, about 1/4 of the way in. Roll the pastry into a tube. Brush with lightly beaten egg and cut each roll into thirds.
4. Place on a baking tray and bake for 35 minutes, until the beef mixture is cooked through and the pastry is puffed and golden.
